Jake Epp

Jake Epp served Provencher as MP for many years and the Town of Steinbach decided to name the new Library after him as a tribute to the many years that he served us in that position.

Jake Epp was first a teacher in the community and then became a town councillor, Member of Parliament and federal cabinet minister. He was the first person of Mennonite background to sit on the federal cabinet. He began his first term as MP in 1972 and held three cabinet positions - Indian affairs, health and welfare, and energy. He retired from public life in 1993 and moved to Calgary, Alberta, to take a position with TransCanada Pipelines.

The Library was honoured when Mr. Epp returned to his hometown to open the new Library, June 21, 1997.
