Summer Reading Program
While every child naturally looks forward to summer and a break from school, it is becoming more and more important that they don't take a break from reading. Recent studies have shown that children’s testable reading level can drop by as much as three grades during a book-free summer break. This is even more of a concern when we realize that if children have not mastered the fundamentals of reading by grade 4, they never catch up. Illiteracy has been linked to anxiety, depression, violent behavior and many other social problems. The Jake Epp Library, the city of Steinbach and the surrounding communities have created and supported the Summer Reading Program as a fun and rewarding way to encourage children to keep reading over the summer vacation.
The Jake Epp Library currently offers its Summer Reading Program in conjunction with TD Bank's Summer Reading Club.
