Here comes summer! While every child naturally looks forward to the break from school, it is becoming more and more important that they don't take a break from reading. Recent studies have shown that children’s testable reading level can drop by as much as three grades during a book-free summer break. This is even more of a concern when we realize that if children have not mastered the fundamentals of reading by grade 4, they never catch up. Illiteracy has been linked to anxiety, depression, violent behavior and many other social problems. The Jake Epp Library, the city of Steinbach and the surrounding communities have created and supported the Summer Reading Program as a fun and rewarding way to encourage children to keep reading over the summer vacation.
This year's theme, LOL (Laugh Out Loud) is designed to encourage the enjoyment of reading among children. All participants receive a reading kit containing a color poster, sticker sheet, and a logbook to keep track of their progress.
Throughout the summer, students who keep up their reading get to enter their names in a weekly drawing to win prizes. Children who continue to turn in reading logs every week of the program will be entered to win a GRAND PRIZE!
